Follow this step by step tutorial to learn how to boil eggs. These eggs will be easy to peel and ready to eat or use in a recipe!
I’ll never forget making that phone call. My grandmother probably chuckled as we hung up the phone that day. I was newly married and in need of some advice. So I called the one woman that I knew would answer my question with no judgement.
“Nana, how do you boil eggs?”
How to prepare supper night after night after night was definitely not covered in our premarital counseling. Here I was standing in the kitchen again, very aware that I knew nothing about cooking and wishing I had spent more time in the kitchen helping my mother and grandmother.
My husband would soon be home from work, hungry and ready to eat. I knew he loved egg salad, and his grandmother had recently given me her recipe. Surely I could follow these directions? Step one: roughly cut up a dozen boiled eggs. Then it hit me like a ton of bricks. How exactly do you boil eggs? I had a basic idea of what should happen. But how long do they boil? And how do you know when they’re done?
So I called my Nana. When she was living, she ran what our family called the “cooking hotline”. Got a cooking question? Call Nana. Having trouble in the kitchen? Call Nana. Need a little advice and a pick me up? Call Nana. She was a wealth of information and only a phone call away.
It’s been about 10 years since that phone call. I can look back with gratitude and a smile, knowing Nana was in my corner, cheering me on. She was confident in me and made me feel confident that I could, in fact, boil eggs and accomplish many other things too.
This recipe (and really this entire blog) is to encourage you to start right where you are, learn something new, and see what you can accomplish. It doesn’t matter where you are or what you know (or don’t know), there’s always something new to learn, explore, and enjoy. I’m certainly not an expert. Or eggs-pert for that matter. But I’m here, in your corner, cheering you on. You got this!
Tips for Boiling Eggs
- Use old eggs. I know that sounds strange. And if I were following a recipe and the first ingredient was “old eggs”, I would certainly be skeptical. But when you use older eggs they are easier to peel after boiling. If you are using eggs from your backyard chickens, you can use the float test to help you determine which eggs would be best for boiling.
- Be sure your pot is large enough to accommodate all the eggs you want to boil. If the eggs are too crowded in the pot there is a greater chance they will crack while boiling.
Ingredients for Boiling Eggs
What You Need:
- Pot
- Eggs – quantity will vary based on your need or recipe
- Enough water to completely cover the eggs
How to Boil Eggs
- First, carefully put the eggs in the pot.
- Then, cover the eggs with water. The pot doesn’t need to be full of water by any means, but you need enough to completely cover the eggs and allow for some water to evaporate.
- Turn on high heat.
- Once the water begins to boil, boil the eggs for 8 minutes.
- Put a lid on the pot and remove from heat.
- Let eggs sit for about 10 minutes.
- Finally, run some cold water over the eggs and peel.
